Emily Farnworth

Emily Farnworth is the CEO of Chapter Zero Alliance. A Fellow at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge, she is a globally recognised leader in accelerating climate action through bold, cross-sector collaboration.

With over 25 years at the intersection of business, government, and civil society, Emily has built a career on mobilising powerful coalitions to tackle the climate crisis. She has a proven ability to convene senior decision-makers and drive systemic change towards a low-carbon, resilient future.

As former Head of Climate Initiatives at the World Economic Forum, Emily was instrumental in launching game-changing platforms including Chapter Zero Alliance, the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, the Mission Possible Partnership, and the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance. These initiatives have shaped global climate ambition and action, building on earlier success with RE100—an award-winning campaign driving corporate demand for renewable energy worldwide.

Before transitioning to the non-profit world, Emily spent more than a decade in environmental consultancy with ERM and URS, later founding her own firm to advise senior leaders on sustainability strategy.

She currently serves on the board of Chapter Zero, supporting non-executive directors in climate governance, and is a Cambridge Zero Fellow contributing to cutting-edge research and policy development. Emily holds a Master’s in Environmental Science, Management and Law from Brunel University London.

Rachel Allen

Senior Manager, Knowledge Exchange

Rachel has a Natural Sciences degree from the University of Cambridge and specalised in atmospheric chemistry for her Master’s project dissertation.  Rachel manages the delivery of written briefings, toolkits and case studies from the Initiative and its partners. Rachel also works as a Project Fellow in the Net Zero Pillar of the World Economic Forum, a founding partner of Chapter Zero Alliance.

Sylvie Baird

Associate Director, Strategy & Governance

Sylvie was the Secretariat’s first employee in September 2020 and now oversees its business operations, implementation of Chapter Zero Alliance strategy and its impact. Sylvie studied modern languages at Cambridge University and subsequently an MBA at the Open University Business School, whilst working at Save the Children.

Simon Bowen

Programme Director – Financial Sector Programme

Simon has wide experience of leading programmes, operations, policy, risk, strategy and governance functions in UK government departments and financial services. Most recently, he was Head of Governance and Strategy for a directorate within the international group of HM Treasury. Simon holds an undergraduate degree in politics and international relations from the University of Hull and a master’s in international relations from the University of Cambridge. Simon’s master’s thesis focused on central banks’ developing role in re-positioning financial market rules within global climate governance regimes.

Charlene Cranny

Charlene is a Chartered Sustainable Investment and Finance professional with extensive experience in investment and finance industry associations. She has led policy and market interventions for fair, inclusive and regenerative economies, and at Volans acted as a consultant to FS companies on future-thinking and sustainability best practice and innovation. She is the founder of “Economy of Good”, through which she promotes ethical personal finance to mainstream media audiences.

Gavin Franks

Digital Communications Executive

Gavin is the Digital Communications Executive. He works to ensure the Initiative’s digital communications are agile, consistent and effectively reach their target audiences. He also enhances and disseminates messaging and content across multiple digital platforms. Gavin achieves this by utilising creative and technical skills he has gained across his marketing career over the past 16 years.

Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Barry has previously held several roles within Hughes Hall, where CCE is based, and worked with member-driven organisations throughout his career.

Kirby is the Senior Community Engagement Manager at Chapter Zero Alliance, working to enable CZA Chapters to drive global impact. Her career so far has focused on membership development and partnership account management at the Royal Society of Arts. She studied Social Anthropology with Sustainable Development at the University of Edinburgh and holds an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge.

Zoe Harris

Senior Project Manager

Zoe holds a degree in Business Enterprise and a Masters in Cultures and Organisational Leadership. She is Chapter Zero Alliance’s Project Manager and comes from a background in student recruitment, comms, business development and project management within the University of Cambridge and other UK institutions. Zoe has built a broad experience base of collaborations, setting up new business functions, managing processes and organising knowledge to gain business insights.

Harriet Harthan

Head of Knowledge Exchange

Harriet is Head of Knowledge Exchange at Chapter Zero Alliance. She works across the Initiative teams, partners and chapters to shape and oversee development and transfer of knowledge and content that will equip board directors across the world to accelerate climate action. Harriet was previously Head of Content at the Centre for Climate Engagement where she managed research translation and content development activity to deliver targeted outputs for board directors, practitioners and policymakers. She brings over 20 years of experience working in international climate and energy policy and programme delivery, including in the public sector, private sector and environmental non-profit organisations. She holds a degree in Economics from University College London and a Chartered Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (CIM).

Ben Holroyd-Dell

Ben is the Events Coordinator for Chapter Zero Alliance. With a background in international conference management, he has delivered high value programmes of meetings and events around the world.

Ben has also worked as a communications professional at the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme and the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, both of which are based in Cambridge’s David Attenborough Building. He holds a Master’s Degree in English Literature and is an award-winning short-fiction podcaster.

Melissa Matthews

Communications Manager – Financial Sector Programme

Melissa manages the communications for the initiative’s Financial Sector Programme. She has worked on nature and climate issues for nearly 15 years and held pivotal communications roles at several environmental organisations including WWF and TRAFFIC, where she headed the global communications effort. She is experienced in delivering strategic communications and translating complex ideas for broad audiences. 

Esme Montgomery Friedner

Esme holds a degree in English Literature and a a Master’s degree in Journalism and International Relations from New York University, and comes from a career in strategic communications in the UK Government and public relations agencies in New York and London. She is experienced in developing impactful communications strategies for large international organisations and is Chapter Zero Alliance’s Senior Communications Manager.

Matthew Moss

Associate Director, Global Communities

Matthew manages the teams responsible for engagement with our ‘Global Communities’: that is, the network of Chapters, Partners and Ambassadors who work with board directors on Climate and Nature in the boardroom. 

He has contributed to workshops and discussions for the Alliance in Mumbai, Tokyo, New York and Manila. 

Matthew joined in February 2024 from a varied career in communications, engagement and fundraising in Higher Education. As head of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office at the University of Cambridge, he integrated the work of the external-facing offices – communications, development, and international strategy – in their work with the VC, and wrote over 400 speeches for Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of the University. At Homerton College, he devised an ambitious public relations campaign to reposition the College after it fully joined the University. 

In the 2012 New Year’s Honours list he was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) by HM Queen Elizabeth II. 

Samantha Munns

Sam is responsible for all operational aspects of Chapter Zero Alliance, including human resources, information technology and financial management. She brings a wealth of experience in these areas, with a track record of enhancing organisational efficiency and developing collaborative workplace cultures. She has worked across multiple sectors, ranging from retail and publishing to music and pharmaceuticals, and was also involved in the early phases of Chapter Zero, the Initiative’s UK Chapter. She is a business graduate and qualified performance coach.

Abigail comes from a background of administrative roles in both the public and private sectors. Abigail began working in a French startup company before joining Cambridge University, most recently at a centre partnering Cambridge University and the UK Government. Abigail assists with the support Chapter Zero Alliance gives to its Chapters, supports the core team and is Executive Assistant to the Director. 

Molly Robertson

Molly is the Operations Coordinator for Chapter Zero Alliance, managing the logistics required to ensure smooth and effective daily operations within the company.  Her work includes process development, and tasks of a financial and administrative nature.

Molly holds a degree in Public Relations and Media which she completed at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.  She is skilled in supporting fast-paced teams and providing effective counsel, which she’s done in roles for private and third-sector organisations.

Gurudatta Shirodkar

Gurudatta works across Chapter Zero Alliance’s teams, Chapters and stakeholders to support integration of an evidence-driven evaluation framework that will enable board directors across the world to gauge the impact of climate governance. He brings over 20 years of experience working in the monitoring and evaluation field in humanitarian and community resiliency programming.  He holds an MA in Social Work with a focus on Community Development, and an MSc in Global Environmental Change from Cranfield University.

Rosie is a Community Engagement Manager, focused on building the Initiative’s presence in Southeast Asia. She comes to the Initiative after completing an MPhil in Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge (Clare College) and undergraduate studies in Environmental Economics & Policy and Geography at UC Berkeley. Rosie has also worked in climate risk modelling and renewable energy research and engagement.

Julie Baddeley (Chair)

Julie Baddeley has served on the boards of major organisations in the public and private sectors for 25 years, and founded Chapter Zero, the UK Directors’ Climate Forum, which is part of the international Chapter Zero Alliance, which she also chairs.

Julie is director of FTSE 250 automotive supplier TI Fluid Systems plc, which is leading the transition to electric vehicles, and Senior Independent Director of Marshall of Cambridge, a large defence and property company. She was previously Director of Greggs plc, Ebiquity plc and Yorkshire Building Society, Chair of global recruitment company Harvey Nash, and Director of Camelot Group plc. Before embarking on a portfolio career, she was an Executive Director of Woolwich plc, and an Associate Fellow of the Said Business School.

Julie leads a series of initiatives to help chairs and non-executive directors recognise the opportunities and risks of climate change to their organisations, and sees delivering a zero-carbon economy as the biggest challenge for business in her lifetime. She is a By-Fellow at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge.

Carol Bell

Carol Bell is an experienced board member with a diverse background spanning finance, energy, academia and charities. She co-founded Chapter Zero UK in 2019, serving on its board since inception. Her current board positions include the listed companies Tharisa plc and Bonheur ASA and the private company Windward Energy which invests in decarbonisation of energy in the UK. The first female board member of the Football Association of Wales, she leads on finance and sustainability.

 With 20 years of experience across public, private and charitable boards, Carol has promoted addressing climate change risks and investing in decarbonisation across her portfolio.

 Her career began in the oil and gas industry, followed by a successful period in investment banking, holding senior positions at JP Morgan (Head of European Equity Research), Credit Suisse, UBS, and Chase Manhattan. Her transition to a portfolio career was marked by completing a PhD in Archaeology.

 She has an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and currently serves as Senior Independent Director of the National Physical Laboratory and on the Council of Research England and. Her commitment to cultural preservation is evident in her role as Chair of Heneb – The Trust for Archaeology in Wales.

Charles Ehrhart

Charles Ehrhart is Chief Strategy and Impact officer for the world’s largest climate fund, GCF.  He was previously KPMG New Zealand’s Lead Partner, Climate Change and Sustainability. Charles has supported directors’ climate change journeys across energy, agriculture, transport, and financial services sectors.

Charles was a Steering Committee member of Chapter Zero New Zealand, until his recent move to Seoul for the CCF role, and has more than twenty years of climate-focused advisory experience working within the private sector, governments, the UN, and non-profit organisations on five continents.

Charles is passionate about building a global community of non-executive directors equipped to ensure their companies are future-fit and that global net zero ambitions are transformed into measurable action.  He has a PhD in Social Anthropology from Cambridge University.

Shai Ganu

Shai Ganu is passionate about enhancing board effectiveness, combating climate change, ensuring cognitive diversity on boards, embedding ESG priorities, and driving meaningful behavioural change through incentives and human capital governance. He is the Global Leader for Executive Compensation & Board Advisory business at WTW. Based in Singapore, he has extensive experience working closely with some of the largest companies in the world on Remuneration Committee, Nomination Committee, and Sustainability Committees issues.

Shai serves on Boards and HR Committees of leading companies and not-for-profit organizations in the region. He is a Fellow and Governing Council member of the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID), chairs its Partnerships Committee and is also a member of its ESG Committee. He is also a faculty member with universities and at director associations in the region, teaching courses for current and aspiring Board members.

Yves Hayaux-du-Tilly

Yves Hayaux-du-Tilly is a Partner of the Mexican law firm Nader, Hayaux & Goebel, head of its (Re)Insurance Practice and its Sustainable/ESG Transition Working Group.  For more than thirty years he has been an advisor of multinationals, Mexican and foreign investors in mergers, acquisitions and financing transactions, corporate and governance-related matters.

Yves has been serving over twenty-two years as non-executive director and secretary of the board in various financial institutions; he currently serves as non-executive and independent director of Dentegra Seguros Dentales, Pensiones Principal, Sofia Salud and GNP International Ltd. 
Yves is a co-founder of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain (MexCC) and served as its Chairman from 2011 to 2019.  He also served as Chairman of the Mexican Association of Insurance and Bonding Law (AMEDESEF).  He is currently Co-Chair of Chapter Zero México, the Climate Governance Initiative, member of the Presidential Council of the International Association of Insurance Law (AIDA), and honorary member of the Commercial Bar Association (COMBAR).

Agnes K Y Tai

Agnes is Director of Great Glory Investment Corporation and Senior Advisor of iPartners Holdings Limited, both single family offices.  In her 45 years of serving the financial community she has established and managed asset management companies, consultancies, and new business units within major financial institutions. She spearheaded a risk management unit for Westpac Banking Corporation in 1986, co-founded Peregrine Asset Management (Hong Kong) in 1991 and while at Booz & Co. advised the establishment of a North Asian sovereign wealth fund in 2007.
 
Her leadership roles include Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Supervisory Board member, the Hong Kong Institute of Directors (HKIoD) Council member, and board member of an NGO. She is faculty of Competent Boards and HKIoD, advisory committee member of Global Association of Risk Professionals (HK) and Delhi Management Association.

She started sustainable investing in 2010 and began conducting board training in sustainability in 2012. She is an Adjunct Professor of HKU in Sustainability Leadership and Governance, also in Sustainable Global Business and Finance for CUHK. She has served the MTR Corporation sustainability reports Expert Review Panel since 2014 and is a frequent speaker and author.

Her PhD (2022, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) dissertation was “Do carbon risks matter for Hong Kong equity prices?”. She has an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth school of Business and is a graduate of Stanford Directors College.
 

Bernice Lee

An expert on the politics of climate change, innovation for sustainability and resource security, international trade and China, Bernice is a member of the UK Global Resource Initiative Task Force, the UK Climate Change Committee’s International Advisory Group, Energy Foundation China Board, the Steering Committee of the Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS), and the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Energy Transition. Bernice has previously been Director of Climate Change and Resource Security Initiatives at the World Economic Forum, Director of Chatham House’s Energy, Environment and Resources Department, the Global Economy and Finance Programme, and the Hoffmann Centre for Sustainable Resource Economy at Chatham House.

She also held positions at the UN Secretary-General’s office, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Aga Khan Foundation (UK) and served on CIFF’s Climate Change Advisory Board and Shell’s External Review Committee.

In 2011, she was awarded an OBE for services to climate change cooperation.

Her publications have been covered in the Financial Times, New York Times, Wired, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Caijing, Harvard Business Review and the Americas Quarterly.

Laurel Powers-Freeling

Laurel Powers-Freeling’s career spans the financial services, technology, and healthcare sector with senior management and board roles in companies including the Prudential, Lloyds Bank Group, American Express, Marks & Spencer and Uber, and has held board or chair positions in over twenty organisations, including as a Non-Executive Director of the Bank of England.

With degrees from Columbia University and the MIT, Laurel’s working life began at McKinsey and Company, from which she first moved to Morgan Stanley as an investment banker, and then on to corporate roles.

Laurel has also engaged in a range of non-profit organisations, having been a Governor of the Royal Academy of Music and a trustee of several music-related and health/life sciences organisations.

Currently, Laurel enjoys a portfolio career serving as Chair of Uber UK, Ripe Insurance, and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC Ltd). At the Bank of England, she chairs the PRA Cost/Benefit Analysis Panel, an independent body commission by Parliament to evaluate the value and impact of Bank of England and Prudential Regulatory Authority policies and regulation.  She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, a Quondam Fellow of Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge and a trustee board member of Chapter Zero Alliance.

Professor Deborah Prentice

Professor Deborah Prentice became the University of Cambridge’s 347th Vice-Chancellor on 1 July 2023.

An eminent psychologist, Professor Prentice carried out her academic and administrative career at Princeton University, which she first joined in 1988. She rose through the academic ranks and took on administrative responsibilities of increasing scope, chairing the Department of Psychology for 12 years, serving as Dean of Faculty for three years, and then serving six years as Provost, with primary responsibility for all academic, budgetary, and long-term planning issues.

Her academic expertise is in the study of social norms that govern human behaviour – particularly the impact and development of unwritten rules and conventions, and how people respond to breaches of those rules. She has edited three academic volumes and published more than 50 articles and chapters, and she has specialised in the study of domestic violence, alcohol abuse and gender stereotypes.

Sharon Thorne

Sharon is a director of Rio Tinto plc. She was the Deloitte Global Chair from 2019 – 2023. She has 37 years of experience auditing and advising clients across a broad range of sectors and has spent more than three decades on various Deloitte and external not for profit boards, including 14 years on the Deloitte Global Board.

An advocate for collective action on environmental sustainability and climate change, Sharon regularly engages with global leaders from businesses, governments and NGOs on these topics, and frequently speaks about ESG-related matters in public forums. She is a strong believer in the need for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in business and civil society, and she has long championed greater diversity in senior leadership roles to build a more equitable future for all.

Sharon’s previous governance experience includes the A4S Advisory Council, the Social Progress Imperative Board, the World Economic Forum Centre for New Economy and Society Stewardship Board, the Shanghai International Financial Advisory Council, the Confederation of British Industry Board of Directors and as a Trustee for Prostate Cancer UK.

Sharon graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy, Economics, and Politics; and is a fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Ron Zimmern

Dr. Ron Zimmern is a pioneering figure in public health genomics, recognised for his thought leadership and commitment to integrating genomics into public health and healthcare policy. He created the original Public Health Genetics Unit in 1997 and its successor the PHG Foundation in 2007, for which he now serves as Chairman focused on governance and strategic development.

He has built international networks in the public health field and continues to be active in an international leadership role, working closely with colleagues and institutions around the world, including in the USA, Canada, Europe and Hong Kong.

Trained in medicine at Cambridge and London (specialising in neurology before entering public health medicine), Ron has served on an array of national committees, has an Honorary Professorship in Public Health at the University of Hong Kong and is a Life Fellow of Hughes Hall, Cambridge. Ron has several key areas of special interest, including climate change. He co-founded the Centre for Climate Engagement at Hughes Hall and supported the foundation of Chapter Zero in the UK, and the work of the global Climate Governance Initiative.
